New Year, New Tricks

A black, tan, and white Yorkie mix is sitting, wearing a tophat that says Happy New Year!

With 2016 right around the corner, many people are making New Year’s Resolutions….some easier to keep than others! Instead of making a resolution that you won’t be able to keep, how about making an achievable goal of teaching your dog some new tricks?

With flexible scheduling in open-enrollment classes that are fun and easy to follow, training your dog might be the one resolution you actually keep! Calmer Canines offers classes for every age and social skill level, and beginner through advanced obedience. (In-home private training and owner-absent day training is also available.)

Puppy Social Hour

This class is for puppies 8-16 weeks old and allows for critical early socialization opportunities. Puppies will learn healthy play/social skills with other puppies and strangers, as well as build confidence with new sights, sounds, surfaces, and smells. Puppy nuisance behaviors (potty/crate training, mouthing, barking, etc) will also be covered. Class is offered Sundays from 12:00-1:00pm.

AKC STAR Puppy

This class teaches basic obedience, manners, and social skills to puppies 3-6 months old. Class includes: 1 Owner Orientation + 6 group sessions with your dog + the AKC STAR Puppy test. Behaviors taught include: Touch, Come, Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Leave It, Drop It, Loose Leash Walking, and basic manners. Classes are offered Saturdays from 9:00-10:00am and Sundays from 10:30-11:30am.

NEW! Back to Basics

This class teaches basic obedience skills and manners to dogs 6 months and older with little-to-no reliability in obedience skills. Training goals are similar to the AKC STAR Puppy class, and dogs under 1 year of age will be eligible to take the STAR Puppy test. Class includes: 1 Owner Orientation + 6 group sessions with your dog. Behaviors taught include: Touch, Come, Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Leave It, Drop It, Loose Leash Walking, and basic manners. Classes are offered Saturdays from 10:30-11:30am.

Canine Country Club

This class works on off-leash obedience, skills to pass the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen test, and fun & games. Because much of the class is done off-leash, this class is for dogs with moderate to excellent social skills, and they must be reliable at a basic level of standard obedience skills (Come, Sit, Down, Stay, Leave It). PREREQUISITE: completion of AKC STAR Puppy, Back to Basics, instructor evaluation (free) or current student referral is required. Class is offered on Sundays from 9:00-10:00am.

Reactive Anonymous

This class is specifically designed to teach relaxation and focus skills to dogs who are fearful and/or reactive towards dogs, strangers, bikes, etc. The goal is to be able to return to more normal walks and everyday life even in the face of your dog’s triggers. Owners must attend an Orientation and have at least one private session with their dog before attending group class. Classes are offered on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30pm and Saturdays from 4:30-5:30pm. Classes on 1st and 3rd Monday nights from 7:00-8:00pm are slated to begin in February or March.
